INTRODUCTION:

By way of The Municipal Corporations Act of 1990, each borough, city and regional corporation has its own team of municipal police. There are 14 Municipalities in Trinidad(Tobago has its own system). They are: Port-of-Spain, San Fernando, Arima, Chaguanas, Point Fortin (all Boroughs), Couva–Tabaquite–Talparo, Diego Martin, Mayaro-Rio Claro, Penal-Debe, Princes Town, San Juan-Laventille, Sangre Grande, Siparia, Tunapuna-Piarco.

While the powers and responsibilities of the Municipal Police are the same as the 'regular' police, one of the major mandates of the Municipal Police, is to provide a community based approach to policing. This means that the municipal police are willing to work and play with the members of the communities that they serve.
